The reason behind this is that the basic mechanism and cause behind many different conditions is often the same, a subluxation. A subluxation is the restriction of a joint causing irritation or pinching of the nerves and altered feedback to the brain. Depending on where the subluxation is, the symptoms may vary – e.g. if in the lower neck, pain or symptoms in the arm may be felt such as pins and needles.
People usually consult a chiropractor for spinal pain such as back or neck pain. However we often find that, following treatment, patients also report improvement in a wide range of other conditions. Many patients for example report that they sleep better and have more energy. This is thought to be because the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in the body and if it is under stress then it will have a negative impact on the body. For example if the nerve supply is reduced to an area such as an organ, that organ is likely to be negatively affected.
The reason we don’t advertise treatment for these conditions, although there is much research in support, is that the Advertising Standards Agency in the UK does not, at this time, recognise the specific research or methods as meeting their standards. We expect this to change in the near future, and you can view some of the research here, as more and more people are finding out about the benefits of chiropractic care and a healthy lifestyle.
