How simple movement supports mental health and how Chiropractic can help

The other night, while reading through some research (not exactly glamorous, but fascinating), two studies stood out and both pointed to something surprisingly simple: consistent movement can have a powerful impact on mental health.

Study 1: Walking and depression

A study published in The Benefits of Exercise for the Clinically Depressed (PMC, 2004) followed individuals with clinical depression who walked for 20–40 minutes, three times per week. Their symptoms improved more than those who received social support alone.

The takeaway?
Steady, simple movement can create meaningful mental shifts.

This is where chiropractic care can play a supportive role. By improving mobility, balance, and joint function, chiropractic helps make everyday activities, like walking more comfortable and enjoyable, which increases the likelihood that people stick with them consistently.

Study 2: Exercise and brain health

Another study, Exercise Promotes Neuroplasticity in Both Healthy and Depressive Brains (Wiley Journal, 2017), explored how exercise affects the brain itself. Researchers found that movement helps the brain build and reshape neural pathways, a process known as neuroplasticity.

 Why does that matter?

Improved neuroplasticity is linked to

  • Better congnitive function
  • Smoother mood regulation
  • Greater long term mental resilienc

Chiropractic care supports this process by reducing pressure or irritation on the nerves of the spinal cord, allowing clearer communication between the brain and body. When the nervous system can send and receive signals efficiently, the body and brain function better together.

What stood out most in both studies wasn’t extreme workouts or complicated routines. Instead, they highlighted:

Consistency

Support

A body that moves the way it was designed to

This is a great reminder that improving mental and physical health doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Movement matters and simple movement counts.

Easy Ways to Add More Movement into Your Day

Here are a few gentle, effective ways to get started

  • Steady walking
  • Gentle stretching
  • Light strength work
  • Short movement breaks throughout the day
  • Impromptu dancing! Whether you have the moves like Jagger or not!

If your body isn’t moving as comfortably as it used to, Chiropractic care can help remove barriers, restore balance, and support the nervous system. So movement feels good again.

Because when your body moves better, your mind often follows.
