Our Spinal herapist pathway

At Horley, Crawley, Haywards Heath and Guildford Spinal Health, we believe exceptional patient care starts with outstanding education and training. Our Spinal Therapist Pathway has been designed to develop skilled professionals who can confidently assess, treat and support patients with musculoskeletal conditions.

Whether you're visiting one of our clinics or simply want to understand more about spinal therapy, this guide explains what a Spinal therapist does, how they differ from Chiropractors, and how our unique training pathway benefits both clinicians and patients.

What is Spinal Therapy?

Spinal therapy focuses on assessing, treating and rehabilitating conditions affecting the spine, joints, muscles and nervous system. It combines hands-on treatment with rehabilitation, patient education and lifestyle advice to reduce pain, improve movement and support long-term health.

A Spinal Therapist may help with:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Joint stiffness
  • Muscle injuries
  • Postural problems
  • Neck-related headaches
  • Sports and workplace injuries

Treatment isn't just about relieving pain. Our practitioners aim to identify the root cause of your symptoms, helping you improve movement, build strength and reduce the risk of future problems.

Who can become a Spinal Therapist?

Our pathway is designed for professionals with an existing healthcare, movement or rehabilitation qualification. Applicants may come from backgrounds including:

  • Sports Therapy
  • Sports rehabilitation
  • Physiotherapy
  • Osteopathy
  • Exercise rehabilitation
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Other recognised musculoskeletal professions

Alongside professional qualifications, we look for people with excellent communication skills, a passion for learning and a genuine commitment to patient care.

How is a Spinal Therapist different from a Chiropractor?

This is one of the questions we're asked most often.

Both Spinal Therapists and Chiropractors treat back pain, neck pain and other musculoskeletal conditions. They share the same goal: helping patients reduce pain, improve movement and return to the activities they enjoy.

The main difference is their training. Chiropractors complete a specialist chiropractic degree and are registered healthcare professionals.

Spinal Therapists typically begin with another healthcare qualification, such as Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy or Sports rehabilitation, before completing our comprehensive in-house training programme. This provides advanced skills in spinal assessment, rehabilitation, manual therapy and patient care.

Our Spinal Therapists work closely with experienced Chiropractors and other healthcare professionals, ensuring every patient receives the most appropriate treatment and can be referred when needed.

Our Spinal Therapist pathway

We've developed our own comprehensive Spinal Therapist Pathway to bridge the gap between university education and confident clinical practice.

Designed by experienced practitioners , the programme combines structured learning with supervised clinical experience to develop practical skills, clinical reasoning and professional confidence.

Training includes:

  • Comprehensive spinal and musculoskeletal assessment
  • Manual therapy techniques
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Rehabilitation and exercise prescription
  • Functional movement assessment
  • Patient communication and education
  • Clinical reasoning
  • Evidence-informed practice
  • Case management and treatment planning
  • Professional development

A key strength of our pathway is the support every trainee receives.

Rather than learning in isolation, new Spinal Therapists workalongside experienced practitioners who provide mentoring, practical teaching and regular feedback.

Patients also benefit from this collaborative approach, with cases regularly discussed between experienced practitioners to ensure the highest standards of care.
