Darker nights
As the days get shorter and the evenings become darker, it’s a good time to think about how the changing seasons can affect more than just our mood and daily routine.
One important consideration as we head into autumn is vitamin D. Sometimes known as the “sunshine vitamin”.
Vitamin D plays an importantrole in maintaining healthy bones and muscles, making it particularly relevant when we’re thinking about overall spinal health and wellbeing.
Why does vitamin D matter?
Our bodies can produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight. However, in the UK, sunlight is often not strong enough for our bodies to make sufficient vitamin D, especially during the autumn and winter months.
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for maintaining normal bones. It also contributes to normal muscle function and the maintenance of healthy bones.
Because the spine relies on strong bones, supportive muscles and good overall physical function, looking after your vitamin D levels is one small part of taking care of your musculoskeletal health.
Shorter days can mean less movement too
It’s not just sunlight that changes as we head into the colder months. Darker evenings and colder weather can make us less inclined to get outside and stay active.
We might swap an evening walk for the sofa, spend more time indoors, or simply find ourselves moving less throughout the day.
Regular movement is an important part of looking after your spine. Gentle walking, stretching, strengthening exercises and maintaining good mobility can all help you stay active and support your body throughout the year.
Where does Spinal care fit in?

At The Spinal Health Clinics, we take a whole-body approach to spinal health. Chiropractic care and Spinal therapy focuses on the assessment and management of the musculoskeletal system, including the spine, joints and surrounding muscles.
Vitamin D isn't a replacement for appropriate spinal care, exercise or professional advice, but making sure you are looking after your general health can form an important part of the bigger picture!
Ask at your next appointment for more information about the benefits of Vitamin D and how it can support your health and wellbeing.
