Eat well, move well. How nutrition supports spinal health

Eat well, move well. How nutrition supports spinal health

(Happy National Nutrition Month!)

March is National Nutrition Month, and while food often gets credit for energy and immunity, it also plays a big role in how your body moves, recovers, and supports your spine.

What’s on your plate can help support your posture, joints, muscles, and overall spinal wellness.

Your spine isn’t just bones, it’s supported by muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs that all rely on proper nutrition to function well. When your body gets the nutrients it needs, it’s better equipped to handle daily movement, stress, and activity.

Think of food as fuel for movement.

What are some key nutrients that support spinal health?

Calcium and Vitamin D, The Dynamic Duo.

  • These nutrients help support strong bones
  • Found in dairy products, leafy greens, almonds, and fortified foods
  • Vitamin D also comes from sunlight (hello, spring)

Protein

  • Muscles help stabilize and protect the spine
  • Found in dairy products, leafy greens, almonds and fortified foods
  • Helps support recovery after activity or exercise

Healthy Fats

  • For joint comfort
  • Omega-3 fatty acids support joint and tissue health
  • Found in salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds and avocados

Water!

  • Don't forget to hydrate. Spinal discs need hydration to stay flexible
  • Aim to sip water throughout the day
  • Especially as the weather warms up and activity increases

Nutrition works best when paired with regular movement. Stretching, walking and maintaining good posture all help your body use nutrients effectively and support spinal alignment.

Small habits like packing balanced lunches, choosing wholefoods, and staying hydrated can make a big difference over time.

 Make Nutrition a Family Affair

  • Add colourful fruits and veggies to family meals
  • Encourage your children and family to help with food shopping, meal planning and prep.
  • Talk about how food helps bodies grow, move and stay strong

Healthy habits are easier to stick with when everyone’s involved!

Good nutrition supports your body internally, while chiropractic care helps support how your body moves and functions. Together they create a strong foundation for everyday wellness.

This March, celebrate National Nutrition Month by fuelling your body with foods that help you move, feel and function your best. Starting with your spine.
